To: US Congress
Many Americans, especially Republican Americans, like to state that they are for small government, and for lowered taxes, claiming that it’s “your money, so you should keep it.”
Simple research done with any search engine finds that there is a disparity between many states that tend to send Republicans to Washington and many states that tend to send Democrats: The Democratic or “Blue” states tend to be donor states (giving the federal government more money than they receive,) whereas Republican or “Red” states tend to be subsidized states (giving the federal government less money than they receive.) There are exceptions to this rule, of course, Texas, for example, is a donor state that is strongly Republican.
Many citizens of these subsidized states have sent so-called “Teaparty” members to Congress, and we know how the Teaparty hates Socialism, and how Republicans hate “Big Government,” so it is very clear that the time has come for the subsidized states to wean themselves off of the donor’s states’ collective teat. It’s time for them to take off the training wheels and ride the Bicycle without New York, California, Texas, and other donor states holding them up. Insert the metaphor that works best for you. These proud subsidized states deserve a chance to fly without being held up by others.
Of course there will be crises, in a time of fiscal difficulty, it may be hard for states, especially in the deep South, to go from subsisting on as much as twice the federal money they give to going to anything like being a parity state, that’s why this petition is a proposal to cap the federal tax liability of any state to no more than $0.95 for every dollar they receive in tax dollars, and cap the amount of federal money a state can receive at no more than $1.05 for every dollar they put out. It allows those states that can afford it to keep giving a little bit, and those that can’t to keep taking, but stop taking quite so much…it’s only fair.
It may mean that places like Buffalo, New York, can have more than one bridge over the Niagara River, or replace the 99 year old one they have now, and it may mean that West Virginia has to live with a 20 year old freeway. We know it’s hard to live in austerity like that, and feel sorry for West Virginia, but many of us donor states have been living like that for years. It’s hard, but it’s possible, and if it’s too hard for you, you could always move to a state where the money is.
So this petition is to ask some brave member of Congress to please, please, please, put forth a bill that would end the “Redistribution of Wealth” to these subsidized states. Let freedom ring with an “End to the Welfare State” for subsidized states. It’s only fair because it’s “our money,” as the Republicans so often say, and we should keep more of it.
Sincerely,
